At the WiMAXForum 2010 & Compendium Launch

WiMAXForum 2010 – a good day had by all in Lagos

The Lagos edition of WiMAXForum 2010 hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission and Telecom Answers Associates Lagos rose with  a clear consensus that investment in the emerging technologies are necessarily cautious and thoughtful processes.

Prof Raymond Akwule President, Digital Bridge Institute argued in a lead paper the importance of concluding regulatory unification in the information and communications industry. He noted that with increasing convergence of technologies and service providers, regulatory bodies will also, perhaps more than industry players, need to converge as well. Nigeria is only in the early stage of accomplishing this.

The proposed unification of the functions of the NCC and the NBC was the subject of mild controversy last year, but industry players at the forum all agreed on the need to accomplish this, to streamline the allocation of broadcast and telecommunications frequency spectrum. ‘We live in a converging world but our regulatory institutions are very unconverged,’ the Professor observed.

He ran through the emerging responsibilities the NCC will be faced with via the adoption of Next Generation Networks like Wimax and LTE, including, very importantly, social objectives like interoperability and quality of service.

Prof Akwule also asserted that regulation in Nigeria has been transparent from both perspectives of reality and investor perception. He admonished that contributions to universal service funds should respect the trend towards convergence of networks and services, just as he also suggested that the manner of the funding be reviewed.

About WiMAXForum 2010 in Lagos
June 15 & 16, 2010

Given the fast pace and intensity of development in telecommunications, if we were to make an appraisal, we can highlight the following irreducible facts.

What are they?

  • Mobile networks have augmented basic telephony, while laying the foundation for more effective and comprehensive ICT infrastructure.

  • Despite inadequate infrastructure, the unprecedented and unanticipated growth of mobile telephony in Nigeria has exceeded (and continues to exceed) virtually all forecasts thus attesting the latent demand.

  • The next logical progression, which will undoubtedly have a more profound impact on Nigeria’s overall development, is the proliferation and advancement in the use of the Internet.

  • But in order for the Internet to achieve its potential in Nigeria, next generation intercontinental fibre optic bandwidth is urgently needed.

With the imminent launch of the Glo1 and MainOne submarine cables incorporating traffic to and from Nigeria, the prospect of broadband provision and access edges ever closer to reality as we become inter-connected to countries in West Africa and the rest of the world.

What does this really mean?

This privately funded colossal project assists communication carriers in West Africa through the sale of wholesale international capacity to global networks via India and Europe. The fibre optic cable system provides African retail carriers with equal and open access to inexpensive bandwidth, removing the infrastructural bottleneck thus supporting Nigerian economic growth.

Where next from here?

By bringing the submarine cable to Lagos, Glo1 and MainOne have done their bit.  The hard task of taking this ‘roadshow’ to the rest of the country and making the case that it is integral to our socio-political and economic development must be shouldered by all of us. Whether it is the laying of a new cable system, defining requirements, implementation, testing or indeed recognising the business opportunities that will undoubtedly follow, there is a role for all of us – enough to keep us all busy for quite a while

But work must begin in earnest to exploit the available opportunities. However these investments must be guided.

This is the prime objective of  WiMAXForum 2010 seeks to achieve, namely:

To guide investment decisions which players in the telecommunications industry in manner that will precipitate its rapid transformation into digital industries; foster greater regional and economic cooperation and; increased foreign investment in Nigeria

About WiMAXForum 2010 in Lagos
June 15 & 16, 2010

The two major submarine cables which will, very shortly, open to traffic to and from Nigeria have their landing points only in Lagos. Foreign and Local initiatives and investments will be required to take traffic from all over Nigeria to the major cables in Lagos.

There may still be more than 120million Nigerians who are yet to have direct access to telecommunication services. There is, therefore huge business to do and big investments to make.

These investments are best protected when they are guided.

That is what WiMAXForum 2010 seeks to achieve, namely:

  • To guide investment decisions which players in the telecommunications industry must take, and
  • To provide enduring networking platform for businesses so that they run smoother and better.

About WiMAXForum 2010 in Lagos

June 15 & 16, 2010

Look at it this way:

The Glo1 and MainOne submarine cables which will, very shortly, open their mouths to traffic to and from Nigeria have their landing point only in Lagos.

Who takes the traffic from all over Nigeria to the cables in Lagos?

Nigerian businessmen and women of course!

How much business is there to do?

You do not know?

How many Nigerians have telephones?

You do not know?

I do not know either.

Let us do a crude estimation.

We are told there are 78million SIM cards that have been sold to telephone users.

How many telephone USERS are in the market?

If every USER has two SIM Cards to himself then there cannot be more than 37 million users.

The figure may be far less than that.

Use any figure you like

There will be more than 120million Nigerians who do not have telephones.

What does that tell us?

It tells us there is still big business available to do.

Nigerians talk a lot

Nigerians have talks to do

Nigerians must talk

Their Talking translates to business.

And Nigerians have to do this business to exploit the available opportunities.

These investments must be guided.

That is what WiMAXForum 2010 seeks to achieve, namely.

To guide investment decisions which players in the telecommunications industry must take and to provide networking platforms for business so that they run smoother and better.

TELECOM ANSWERS ASSOCIATES

…..serving since 1991

In recent weeks, CyberschuulNews has been providing publicity for the forthcoming WIMaxForum2010 to be held in Lagos in June - publicity which, in various guises, has raised awareness about the aims and objectives of the forum. As the event draws nearer and in an email interview, I asked
Mr. Titi Omo-Ettu, my publisher, and CEO of TELECOM ANSWERS ASSOCIATES that is hosting the event for his take on its timing and significance, his expectations, participation and perceived benefits.

AB: Why WiMAXForum 2010 and why now?

TOE: Wimax primarily because it is undeniably the ‘now and future’ of mobile systems and broadband solution. Its timing is now because it coincides with Nigeria putting itself on the broadband map via the investiture of two major Trans Atlantic submarine cables which will incorporate  traffic to and from Nigeria. Unfortunately they land only in Lagos. We therefore must shoulder the responsibility to ensure that this encompasses the whole country. Rather than be passive or merely mouth its benefits and allow external forces to tell us of its huge commercial benefits, we must demand proper counseling to avoid the decimation of investment, in both infrastructure and human capital, as a result of an inability and/or unwillingness to properly manage technology for business.

AB: Word has it that the participation cost is steep.

TOE: Well perhaps, but only for those who have no business being there. Those who recognize the potential and full benefits unsurprisingly do not think so. For them, the cost of participation represents good value for their money.

AB: The budding entrepreneurs you talked to last week feel they have been excluded.

TOE: They might well do but it is a clear case of ‘horses for causes’. Last week’s event was to motivate these budding entrepreneurs of the boundless opportunities of the future and the challenges underutilization will pose. They represent potential.  The WiMAXForum 2010, however is for fully fledged entrepreneurs. It is an assembly and network of World-class managers, investors, business men, consultants and solution providers This is a capital-intensive business and we are talking of building systems and infrastructure – usually beyond the expertise and financial capabilities of up and coming entrepreneurs. Without being disparaging this ‘separates the men from the boys’ . Mark you, we are not planning a training Program.

AB: Is it a combination of a Conference and exhibition?

TOE: Yes there is the Summit component which is the major item of the Agenda. A few solution providers who would want patronage when we eventually make up our minds to invest will just have to showcase their products and commence a networking of contacts, solutions and opportunity chase. We are also launching the Compendium of Nigeria’s Telecommunications Industry and its Players which is a document the likes of which we have never had before and will be given free for participants. It is an encyclopedia any potential investor anywhere in the world would need if they want to invest in Nigeria. And we hope it reaches all parts of the world.  For example I will expect you to market it for a fee there in the UK after the event. Your counterpart in America will also do same.

AB: What next after WiMAXForum 2010?

TOE: Convergence. Not only of the separate sectors that should constitute a true ICT industry, but also of ideas, agenda as well as the pooling of talent and resources thus making it a campaign issue - something that is well due if not long overdue.
